Kalene Engel will discuss the interplay between the Minnesota Paralegal Association Code of Ethics and Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct, drawing upon her years of experience in working as and with paralegals.

Kalene Engel earned a Bachelors Degree in Paralegal from Winona State University in 1990 and a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. She was employed as a paralegal at Suk Law Firm from 1990 to 1997 and as an associate attorney from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, she started her own law practice in downtown Winona and is currently in her 18th year of
solo practice. From 1998 to 2017, she taught various paralegal classes at Winona State University as an adjunct professor, including topics in legal ethics. Several of her former students and five of her past paralegal employees have continued onto law school and are practicing attorneys.

In 2008, Kalene was hired as the Executive Director as the Winona County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). Under her guidance, Winona County has received over $2 million in state and federal grant funding and has launched several successful initiatives, including a re-entry program, drug court, supervised visitation program and mental health initiative. Kalene has also served her local community as a municipal clerk for 14 years and was recently elected to the school board. Kalene lives in rural Fountain City, Wisconsin with her husband and two children.
