Presentation Information: Walter Burk, staff attorney for the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MAC-V) in Minneapolis, will be our guest speaker. MAC-V is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping MN Veterans since 1990 with housing, food, employment, legal assistance, etc. Walter will educate paralegals about MAC-V in general and the Vetlaw program and will explain how paralegals play an important role in contributing and assisting in providing quality legal services to veterans.

Speaker Information: Walter Burk has extensive experience as an attorney from both sides of the judge’s bench. After graduating with honors from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2000, he worked as a staff attorney in the U.S. District Court of Nevada. He advised all district judges on habeas corpus, civil rights litigation, and death penalty cases. In November 2001, Walter was hired as a staff attorney in the Minnesota Supreme Court in the State Court Administrator’s Office. Among his duties, he advised the design team responsible for creating the Minnesota Court Information System and advised court administrators statewide on a variety of legal matters. In 2004, Walter worked at the Fourth Judicial District’s Self Help Center, assisting pro se parties with their family law issues. In April 2008, Walter joined Central Minnesota Legal Services as a staff attorney. He focused his efforts on two programs: representing unmarried fathers seeking custody and parenting time rights, and representing veterans in family law, housing, consumer rights and other areas of law. In 2012, The Minnesota Fathers and Families Network awarded Walter with its Outstanding Individual of the Year Award. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, Hennepin and Ramsey County Bar Associations, and a member of the MSBA Military and Veterans Affairs Section Council. Walter is a veteran, having received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force after completing his enlistment as a Minuteman Nuclear Missile Technician.
