Topic: The Scottsboro Boys

The topic is the 1931 Alabama rape trials of the nine African-American men. No crime in American history - let alone a crime that never occurred - produced as many trials, convictions, reversals, and retrials as did the alleged gang rape of two white girls by nine black teenagers on March 25, 1931. This case generated 11 trials, many reversals and two famous United States Supreme Court decisions. It finally ended on April 19, 2013, with all nine of the accused being pardoned by Alabama Governor Robert Bently.

Speaker: Jim Fleming

Jim Fleming has been an attorney for 32 years. He is currently the Chief Public Defender in Ramsey County, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Before that he was a partner at the law firm of Maschka, Riedy and Ries in Mankato. Fleming was also the Chief Public Defender for the Fifth Judicial District in Mankato. A veteran of hundreds of criminal trials, Jim’s voracious interest in history has lead him to studying American criminal justice history.

CLE Credit is being applied for this session.
