Topic:  Workplace Disability Accommodations in the time of COVID-19

Two experienced civil rights lawyers discuss the reasonable accommodation law, the versatility of the legal standards, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to reimagine the universe of accommodations.

NOTE: This will be the last employment law sectional in 2021. You won't want to miss it - this presentation is filled with great, relevant content as we continue to navigate the post-pandemic world.

Speaker:  Nick Pladson and Laurie Vasichek

Nick Pladson | General Counsel | Minnesota Department of Human Rights

Nick Pladson is the General Counsel for the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. Prior, Nick worked at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) since2007 when he was hired as a Trial Attorney through the EEOC’s attorney honors program. As a Trial Attorney, Nick represented the EEOC in all aspects of employment discrimination litigation in federal court, including bench and jury trials. Nick was responsible for developing and bringing individual, class, and systemic discrimination prosecutions that resulted in millions of dollars damages and sweeping equitable relief for victims of discrimination. Nick then served for three years as EEOC Administrative Law Judge, where he adjudicated hundreds of employment discrimination cases brought by federal government employees and contractors. Most recently, Nick served as the Acting Director of the Minneapolis Area Office. In that role, he managed agency programs to enforce federal employment discrimination law in Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Nick is a 2007 graduate of William Mitchell College of Law and completed his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Laurie Vasichek | Adjunct Professor, University of Minnesota Law School | Former Senior Trial Attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Laurie Vasichek is a former Senior Trial Attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. A graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, Vasichek clerked for a judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals after law school before joining Dorsey & Whitney law firm as a trial attorney. She joined the EEOC as a trial attorney, and pursued some of its most significant litigation, including its first case challenging genetic testing under the ADA. She is a member of the College of Labor and Employment Attorneys, the former chair of the MSBA’s labor and employment law section, and a former member of the Federal Practice Committee for the District of Minnesota.
